Tipasa And Timgad Ruins

Tipasa and Timgad ruins
browse (1 / 2)

Algeria is one of North Africa’s most prominent Arab countries and is the continent’s second largest nation after Sudan. Its vast land space means that it shares its borders with numerous other countries including Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, and Mauritania; it also has a stretch of Mediterranean Sea coastline to the north. As Algeria is quite aesthetically attractive and blessed with a rich cultural and traditional heritage, visitors may struggle on deciding which attractions to see.

An un-missable activity however is visiting the ruins of Djemila, Tipasa, and Timgad. Djemila was once part of a powerful Roman north-south axis that stretched between various towns in Algeria and Tunisia and means ‘lovely’ in Arabic. Most of this influential Roman stronghold was destroyed by earthquakes and other factors leaving standing just a few buildings. The focal point of Djemila is the museum which houses a stunning collection of mosaics that have been lifted and restored from some of the masterpieces that had been shattered. Likewise, the ancient roman ruins of Tipasa and Timgad are well worth a look as they pay rich tribute to the Roman occupation of Algeria.

Timgad is an easier place to explore than Djemila because of the grid-shaped plan of the city and the fact that many of the ruins have been quite well-preserved meaning visitors will be able to soak up the town’s history on their own without needing a tour guide to help them 24/7; one of Timgad’s main features are the Roman baths which remain in excellent condition. Tipasa is not as informative as the other two towns, but visitors will be able to view and explore a surprisingly well-intact aqueduct which fed Tipasa and neighbouring Cherchell. This supreme structure gives further overwhelming proof to Algeria’s superior Roman heritage.
