The North African country of Algeria has in recent times developed into a bona fide Arabic destination and boasts a magnificent array of wonderful sights and sounds to discover and explore. Known for its aesthetic appeal and contrasting natural spectacles, Algeria is also steeped in a deep and rich cultural heritage with many landmarks around the country paying tribute to this legacy. One of the popular tourist attractions for travellers to visit is the old Roman town of Djemila – a mountain village located near the east coast of the capital city Algiers.

Djemila was bestowed the honour of becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 because of its classic adaptation of Roman architecture to a mountainous environment, and is home to some of the best preserved Roman ruins anywhere in North Africa. Visitors to this part of the world can look forward to viewing authentic remains including a theatre, temples, basilicas, arches, two fora, streets and houses all in a remarkably well-kept condition. The region Djemila is located in is indeed one of great historical significance where the Roman ruins take on the formation of a Harsh, which is a large paved square marked by a majestic arch as its entry point.

Besides the remains, the city is also home to a wonderful museum, which is very popular amongst visitors as it showcases an impressive collection of well-preserved tiles and mosaics which have been lifted and restored from some of the landmarks that have been destroyed in the area. A day trip exploring the Roman ruins of Djemila and the museum promises to be a very worthwhile experience during your Algerian sojourn.
