Climb the skar El Menia

Visitors to the beautiful and fascinating country of Algeria are in for a special journey as this proud nation is home to many wonderful and amazing attractions that promise to rivet and mesmerise any traveller to her shores. This North African country is the second largest on the Dark Continent and has the potential to become one of the region’s most influential holiday destinations. The legendary Sahara Desert is a focal tourist point as are the Sidi Fredj Peninsula and the ski resorts of the Chiffa Gorges and Kabylia, but the desert oasis town of El Golea is one of Algeria’s best-kept secrets.

El Golea is located in central Algeria and is the southern gateway to the Sahara; it is one of the most easterly oasis towns of the Grand Erg Occidental as well as one of the biggest in the south. El Golea has been dubbed the ‘Pearl of the Desert’ or ‘Enchanted Oasis’ by the locals because of its abundant water flow and incredible ability to produce a diverse assortment of agricultural products while seemingly stranded in the middle of nowhere. A popular activity to do in El Golea is to climb up the old skar of El Menia.

The El Menia Skar dominates the El Golean landscape and was built in the 10th Century by the Berbers. The Skar had deteriorated quite badly, but has in recent times been renovated; at the top the views of the surrounding scenery can only be described as mind-blowing and unparalleled. From this vantage point, visitors will be able to view a staggering 200 000 palm trees that dot the El Golean terrain as well as the beautiful oases that make this desert town special.
